| Reality Rant:
Why We Need to Support Dan Lungren Geoff Metcalf
January 30, 1998
I host a daily radio talk show on the conservative station in San Francisco. Notwithstanding the very liberal perception and reality of the bay area, KSFO is a VERY conservative arena. Many of my listeners have expressed concern, frustration and anger at the prospect of Dan Lungren as Governor. His position on guns and his myopia regarding the Second Amendment really ticks off a great many who count themselves Republican/Conservative/Libertarian. His authorship and support of asset forfeiture seizures offends many of the same groups. Lungren is not the ideal candidate. HOWEVER, and I'm serious as a heart attack when I say this: We MUST support Lungren for Governor. Get over it..bite your lip..hold your nose...but SUPPORT DAN LUNGREN for Governor. Everyday, I talk to a LOT of people. For the most part, my audience is conservaitve..and I don't mean woosie, moderate Pete Wilson Republicans. My audience is not two dimensional cartoon stereotype conservatives either. KSFO's audience, and my audience specifically, (like the host) are 'Constitutional Conservatives'. We tend to view most issues contingent on how they balance against the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. My mantra of "..it's not WHO is right or wrong, but WHAT is right or wrong" has generally been well received and embraced. I have, and will, eschew the so-called 11th commandment and routinely and consistently speak ill of republicans if, or when, they are wrong. Now for those starry eyed purists who will vilify me for compromising
principles or defending the indefensible, here is my rationale, and YOUR
reality check. Dan Lungren certainly has his faults. HOWEVER,
he is the best we will get. Please note the following:
If you want smaller government, less bureaucracy, at least the possibility of restoring the Republic to what the framers intended, then you must vote for Dan Lungren for Governor. You don't have to like it, but for the good of the state AND the Country, you must keep a Republican in the Governor's office. |
